Who we are

Dr. Susan Chapple is the Founder and Director of JBSafe Ltd. Leveraging 20 years of experience as a laboratory scientist across academia, clinical labs, and biotechnology companies in Oxford and Cambridge, Susan combines her scientific expertise with a deep commitment to health and safety. She is energised by supporting safe science, fostering a culture of safety and helping businesses in managing risks effectively. The combination of scientific experience and health and safety expertise allows her to provide bespoke, pragmatic solutions that promote safe, sustainable, and successful science. Susan holds a PhD in virology, is a Fellow of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM), is a Member of the Institute of Science and Technology (MISTR), and is a Certified Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CertIOSH).

Dr Trevor Smith is the Specialist Consultant for Laboratory Health, Safety and Biosafety at JBSafe Ltd. Trevor brings over 28 years of experience as a scientific researcher and head of a protein production facility, along with 19 additional years as a Biosafety Officer, including 14 years as Head of Health and Safety at the Babraham Research Institute. Trevor is driven by a desire to support both new and established organisations, learning about their exciting research and helping them adopt a sensible approach to their Health and Safety. Trevor’s combination of skills, knowledge and vast experience allows JBSafe to develop practical and pragmatic approaches to laboratory Health, Safety and Biosafety ensuring the science can proceed safely, smoothly and efficiently, whilst fulfilling legal obligations and reassuring senior managers and funders.

JBSafe: The idea behind the name is simple, with J&B coming from the initials of Susan's children. A reminder that safety is personal and protecting people is at the heart of what JBSafe does.
